Questions & Answers
Common questions about our pistolsmithing services, build process, and what to expect when working with Valor Precision.
Getting Started
Valor Precision is a small family-run pistolsmithing shop specializing in the 1911/2011 pistol platforms.
“VP” is owned by U.S. Marine veteran, Nick Wasley. Along with earning the MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) of 2112 Precision Weapon Technician/Gunsmith, Nick has also completed his Ordnance Apprenticeship, Machinist Apprenticeship, and has earned an (AS) degree in Firearm Technology and Ballistics. He has over 18+ years of experience with both civilian and U.S. Military firearms. He takes pride in every project with a strict adherence to precise detail. Nick’s motto of “Always Take Care of Your Shooters” resides in every interaction and every build.
Shipping firearms is heavily regulated. Non-FFL holders must follow these steps to comply with federal, state, local laws, and carrier rules:
- Use an FFL: We strongly recommend shipping through a Federal Firearms Licensee (e.g., local gun shop or range). Find one at OpenFFLs.com or GunBroker.com. FFLs handle legal firearm shipments.
- Non-FFL Restrictions:
- Handguns: Non-FFL holders cannot ship handguns via USPS, UPS, or FedEx. Use an FFL to ship to Valor Precision, LLC.
- Rifles/Shotguns: Non-FFL holders can ship unloaded rifles/shotguns via USPS within the same state or to an FFL elsewhere, using tracking and signature services (e.g., Registered Mail). UPS and FedEx restrict non-FFL shipments.
- Packaging:
- Ensure the firearm is unloaded and in a plain, sturdy box meeting carrier standards (e.g., USPS DMM 601.1-7).
- Do not ship ammunition in the same package.
- Use no markings indicating firearm contents.
- Documentation: Include Valor Precision’s FFL form (provided upon registration) and your contact info when shipping via an FFL.
- Insurance: We recommend package insurance, as Valor Precision, LLC is not liable for lost or damaged shipments. Remove custom parts (e.g. holsters) before shipping.

Valor Precision utilizes QuickBooks for our invoice payment processing. QuickBooks allows us to accept credit cards, ACH payments, and certified checks (expect longer processing time). We also accept cash and money orders.
No, we do not have a retail storefront. All of our firearms are custom-made and tailored to the client’s requests.
Your Build
Our default trigger setup is a short roll with a 3lb 8–12oz break.
Trigger pull weight, pre/post travel and reset are adjustable to some degree and can be set to accommodate the shooter’s specifications.
Firearm serial numbers do not have a default location and can vary by manufacturer. However, a majority of 1911/2011 serial numbers can be found on the right side of the frame.
All new builds and rebuilds have live fire test procedures to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the 1911/2011. All firearms, regardless of the project or services, are safety/function tested.
Currently, we offer the below refinishing services. However, outside vendors can be outsourced to achieve the desired finish upon special request (additional cost and lead times may be observed):
- Manganese Phosphate (Parkerizing)
- Cerakote
- Hot Bluing (Bluing Salts)
- PVD, DLC and TiN (Black, Chromium and Gold)
The standard 1911 grip profile is ergonomically very comfortable and easy to handle. Additionally, the 1911 can accommodate slim grips, standard thickness, and palm swell to fit a wide range of hand sizes. The 2011/double-stack platform is very similar to the 1911 profile in terms of geometry but is thicker to accommodate the larger magazine.
Your VP Firearm
Firearm frequency of cleaning is a controversial and shooter-opinionated subject. It is suggested that at least a 2–5 minute field strip to remove carbon/debris should be practiced at the conclusion of any range session/day. Heavy firing range events (250+ rounds) should receive proper lubrication prior to and cleaning after.
Ammunition should be obtained from a reputable ammunition manufacturer and in the correct caliber for the firearm.
- .45 ACP: 230gr JHP or FMJ suggested
- 9mm: 115–124gr JHP or FMJ suggested
